Cheddar the most widely purchased and eaten cheese in the world?

Seeing as UK is seen as a culinary backwater, it seems strange that England's Cheddar is reported as the most widely consumed cheese in the world. Who is eating this? When ever I've looked in the cheese sections of Italy, France or Germany there isn't an ounce of cheddar in sight.
