Tips for looking for and choosing an apartment?

I'm going to need an apartment (or at least start looking) soon, and I'm clueless. I'll be going to culinary school and I need a place closer to my college and also closer to my bf and where he works. But I'm 17 and obviously haven't looked for an apartment before, have any tips?
